The sliced beef pancake was one of the best things I have eaten in a long time. I would go there again just to eat an order all by myself.Everything else was also very good and I would certainly go back again.

Very big portions and really delicious. They've got this one dish that comes out in a metal stove with a little fire underneath. I forgot what it is called but it has pork blood, intestines, tofu and a little spicy. VERY FREAKING GOOD! The best I've tasted so far.

came here around 9:30pm which i know sucks cause they close at 10pm. We were respectable at didn't leave too late. left at 10:05pm. food wasn't too good at that time. I did however enjoyed the crispy intestines. it was a good bar food type dish. we got the eggplant, some noodle soup thing, dumplings, intestines, and some white rice. wasn't great but i think i'd consider going back another time when its not close to closing. i did like their customer service. super nice to us.

Great dishes for the winter, especially the various cauldrons of veges and meats. Their cumin lamb is tasty. My wife did all of the ordering as she picked her favorites.

The first time I came, my friend recommended the preserved cabbage with pork belly soup. It was an interesting taste. Sour, but yet pleasant, taste. I wasn't excited about the pork belly, though. I mainly stuck to the cabbage and the clear noodles that were underneath the pot.For about $8, that soup came out in a freaking wok! I was surprised how big it was! It can easily serve me for another 5 meals! We also ordered the shrimp fried rice (which tasted pretty normal and nothing special) and the spicy meat dish for appetizer. It didn't give me the numbness I was expecting for as I get from other Szcheun restaurants. Well, I guess this isn't that type of restaurant, so I don't blame them.Second time I came, ordered the soup again....just wasn't sitting in well. Also ordered the green onion pancake (too much dough and flour, and not enough green onions and taste), and the spicy fish. I definitely got he spicy numbness from that dish! Taste was good, but texture, eh. Too much cornstarch. I felt like I was eating a bowl of cornstarch.After the meal, I felt uneasy. Not sure if it was just my hangover or just the food.

My bf and I are regulars - we actively try not to go there because we eat there too much. The food we order always comes out very hot and full of flavor. We'reFavorite Dishes: Salt and Pepper Tofu; Szechuan Eggplant; Saute String bean; Snow Pea Leaf; Tofu and Ginger Soup. #vegetarianFor those who gave bad reviews about the language barrier, we've never had a problem, even when we've asked for some special requests. A little patience goes a long way. We also know to point to things on the menu as a courtesy (waiters/tresses get stressed out too!).Service is always super friendly. I suggest going at dinner time when the restaurant is less busy - tour buses dine at the restaurant during lunch, so it gets pretty full.

Le sigh.....I had high hopes for this place but was quite disappointed. The only redeeming qualities about this place were the prices and the sour napa and lamb casserole.HIT - The sour napa and lamb casserole is one of my favorite chinese dishes and they made this one very well. Quite delish!Sadly, nothing else was good.MISS - dan dan noodles - off the menu but the waiter said the kitchen can make it. Naturally, we got super excited. The noodles had the "ma la" chili that completely numbed my mouth making me unable to taste anything else. I do NOT recommend this. No warning from waiter either!MISS - Xiao Long Bao - Is it possible to have bad XLB? Yes. and it's in Dong Bei MamaMISS - potato eggplant and green bellpepper. Lots of superfluous sauce - nothing remarkable. Tasted like takeout from your typical neighborhood bad Chinese food street corner restaurant called King of Hunan or Hunan Flavor Delight.Overall not a good dining experience. Food was comme ci comme ca. Waiter forgot our order of XLB. I was not able to enjoy our food because my tongue was numb and I also left with a numb tongue.I will say this though, there were many other items on the menu that looked promising so I wont write this place off entirely. I guess you just need to know what to order. But wouldn't you rather go to a restaurant where everything was good?

The beef pancake roll is indeed delicious, as is the fish and tofu in spicy sauce. They have a young bamboo braised in oil that's really great, not too spicy and delightfully flavorful. The Dalu noodles are nothing to write home about, but alright. The shrimp fried rice wrapped in lotus leaves is homey - filling and comforting with lots of peas and a light splash of eggs.All the northern Chinese immigrants and tourists in San Francisco seem to know and frequent this place. It's one of the few Chinese places in the city where speaking Cantonese is not a local status symbol, and mandarin of various northern accents can be heard.The bathroom is clean, and doubles as a storage area for extra tables and chairs.I'm really charmed by how the restaurant's English and Chinese names work as a pair. Dongbei mama's Chinese name is Country Bumpkin () - making it one of the few restaurants I can think of where the names represent two different genders yet connotes similar sentiments!

You really can't go wrong with Dong Bei Mama. The price is moderate along with the quality of the food, and the selection is incredible. They have so many plates with just vegetables that I don't feel pressured to always eat meat here.There's a good reason this place is packed with Chinese people at night.

You'll notice that everyone here is talking about the sliced beef pancake roll. That's because it's legit. It's the size of my arm and delicious. It's like a sandwich wrap filled with fresh onions and thin slices of beef. Do yourself a favor and order this. Thanks mama.My tummy gives Dong Bei Mama...4 Stars!

I came here in a group of 7 for a Saturday night dinner. I somehow managed to be the only non-Chinese person in the group so I let the others order a bunch of dishes, and what a great job they did!We got the sizzling platter cumin lamb, green beans, a hot pot with cubes of delicious pork belly, a slightly tart (but yummy) soup, pork buns, a beef wrapped in roti-like bread dish, and spicy sauteed tofu with pork. Apologies for not knowing the actual dish names. I literally browsed through menu and as I heard my friends talking about dishes, I basically put the menu down and let them have at it.The point is, the dishes we got were all very flavorful and delicious. The beef wrapped in pancake/roti-like bread was awesome. The pork belly chunks in the hot pot were also delicious. I pretty much could eat any of those dishes again, if only what they were actually called. The sauteed tofu/pork was a little bit spicy (I was worried it'd burn my tongue off, but I was ok).Minus one star for the flavorless cornbread like muffins that came with the soup and the buns for having a high bun to filling ratio. Overall though, the food was good and I left happy (and full!). The whole meal cost us only $13.50 each. A steal!!I like that this restaurant specializes in more northern Chinese food, so I actually got to try completely new dishes this time. I hope to come back!

great Chinese/Sichuan food, definitely one of the better ones in the City. We come here mainly for the BF's favorite dish: the sichuan fish filet dish - filet fish soaked in hot, spicy sichuan sauces. We usually just order it to go. I bring a tupperware for the to-go order and they are very accommodating. It's also very well-priced-most dishes range from $9-$14 each, and portions are family-size!They look like they have great appetizer dishes (like those cold sesame seaweed).A lot of tour buses drop off the tourists here to eat as well. Always a great sign if they continue to bring Chinese tourists here to eat!

Authentic Chinese food from the Dong Bei and Sichuan region. It's no frills with the decor and atmosphere but very serious about the food.I recommend the beef roll which is basically a fried dough with beef, cilantro, and peking duck sauce. I also liked the lamb and napa cabbage stew. The sliced pork ear is okay if you're willing to be adventerous -- it really doesn't taste weird or anything, just a bit oily.The dumplings are pretty par for the course and aren't anything to brag about. The Dongbei fried pork is sweet and is hard to eat a lot of but certainly is different.

This used to be Panda Country House or Country Panda House or something. Right?The food is delicious Northern Chinese style with lots of dumplings, noodles, and flatbreads. They have the beef rolls. They have the cold yam noodle appetizer.They also have an amazing cache of tourists from China who get trucked in nonstop for lunch at noon.Hey, if the Chinese tourists from China like this place....

yum! so glad this place exists in the RIchmond. It's hard to find a great chinese place in SF, believe it or not.Favorites:*spicy chicken wings* beef pancake roll (with chives anc cilantro)*black pepper fish cooked in clay potEverything is seriously yummy and not greasy like other places. Service has definitely improved from the earlier reviews.

To enjoy this place one must understand that sichuan peppers will leave a numbing tingling sensation. With that in mind come enjoy a place that does hit the spot for that.This Chinese restaurant has quickly vaulted up to be one of my favorites in San Francisco. Some favorite dishes of mines have been the fillet fish and their beef pancake roll. For me though i don't even bother picking, i let my friends pick because everything I've had here I've enjoyed.Be careful because for some people this place is pretty spicy but if spice is what you love this is a great destination for you.

Come here for the food. And for the surprisingly swift service. Not for the ambiance, of course, but then again when do you ever go to a Chinese restaurant for the ambiance?The one dish alone that makes a trip here worth it is the sliced beef pancake roll. This is my absolute favorite dish -- no exaggeration. Technically it's a northern Chinese dish, but it's been popularized also in Taiwan. It consists of sliced spiced roast beef, green onions, cilantro, and hoisin sauce, all wrapped in a scallion pancake. I can't emphasize how tasty it is when it's done right. I also can't emphasize how difficult it is to find in the Bay Area. To my knowledge there isn't a single other restaurant in SF that serves it. You have to go down to San Mateo, Cupertino, or even Milpitas to find decently-made ones.But the best part about the dish here is that, not only are the ingredients perfectly proportioned, but that the entire dish itself is HUGE. Typically it's served as an appetizer maybe to be split between 2 or 3 people. The one here though is more like a medium pizza -- even with a party of 6 I had to eat an extra slice and a half for us to finish the whole thing.The rest of the dishes we ordered were delicious. We had Sichuan-style boiled fish and fried diced chicken, as well as sauteed pea pod sprouts, fatty pork with bok choy, and a clear rice noodle with veggies. All this we washed down with a couple bottles of Tsingtao.Despite coming here on a busy night (the Saturday before CNY), our dishes came out incredibly fast. Still, one star off for just general slumminess of the place -- it's not to be mistaken for R&G Lounge, anyway.

Definitely not the place to for north eastern chinese food. The shanghai dumplings were the frozen kind and were not close to mimicking Kingdom of Dumpling's frozen dumplings. The skin would just deteriorate and was very soggy. The green onion pancake was good but the ones from Little Beijing blows it out of the water. The hot and sour with pork noodle soup was way too salty. Try going to Taiwan (restaurant) for that. These are the bare standards of north eastern chinese food and it simply does not cut it if they can't excel at any one of them.Bottom line: Look elsewhere.
